Coffee Shop Talks focus on issues at Statehouse

By Jennifer May

The Indiana Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and Indiana Soybean Alliance’s Membership and Policy Committee (M&P) continued their Coffee Shop Talks this winter with small-group discussions alongside Indiana state legislators.

Around 10 farmers, industry partners and staff gathered Jan. 30 at the Bee Hive in Danville, Ind., to meet with State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette), along with State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) and State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle). Also in attendance were ISA M&P Chair David Hardin and additional farmer leaders.

The group discussed topics including the responsibilities and funding of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA), the value of building relationships at the Statehouse and within the ag community, expanding international markets and advancing bio-based products.

Approximately 15 farmers, industry partners and staff gathered at Ann’s Restaurant in Franklin, Ind., to meet with State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville). Attendees included farmer members and partners from Ingredion, Pioneer Seeds and ISDA.

The group discussed agricultural land use, farmland preservation and the importance of ensuring leaders with agricultural backgrounds have a voice at the Indiana Statehouse. Greene emphasized how much he and his colleagues value constituent input and encouraged farmers to visit the Statehouse and reach out directly when issues arise. First Farmers Bank and Trust sponsored the event.

Coffee Shop Talks provide an opportunity for farmers and policymakers to connect in a more personal setting, allowing for meaningful dialogue on issues impacting Indiana agriculture.
