Tom Murphy

Chesterton, District I

Tom Murphy is a dedicated Indiana Corn Growers Association Farmer Leader from Chesterton, Indiana, where he farms soybeans and corn across 3,000 acres in Porter and Lake counties. Known for his innovative approach to modern agriculture, Murphy practices environmentally friendly farming methods, including no-till farming and cover crops. His commitment to sustainability has earned him the title of Conservation Farmer of the Year by the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Murphy’s farming journey began after years of trucking and working alongside Gary Dunlap, who is gradually transferring management of his farm operation to Murphy. The duo’s operation includes raising commodity corn, high-amylose corn, and soybeans. Murphy is passionate about preserving topsoil and preventing nutrient runoff into nearby bodies of water like Lake Michigan.

As the District 1 Director on the ICGA board for four years, Murphy has actively contributed to the Governance Committee and represented ICGA on the National Corn Growers Association’s Sustainability Research Ag Action Team. Through his leadership and farming practices, Murphy is dedicated to advancing the agricultural industry in Northwest Indiana.
